Equipment Car Cargo
Equipment Car Cargo
Cargo van questions (first-time car owner)....?
Okay, I'm seriously considering buying a USED cargo van as my first car. Lol i know....but I'm a musician and I carry a lot of equipment so believe me, this van is going to be so useful. I also travel loads. LOADS.
Anyways, I've been looking at some Dodge ones and I think I may be settled on getting that brand. So,
1) How difficult are they to drive as far as their bulkiness?
2) How good are they with gas?
3) Would it be easy to maybe set up a tiny bed are for sleeping?
4) Is there a way to take the backseats out?
Anything else you think I should know?
Well first you need to understand that vans come in many different sizes, configurations, and types. You have Van Wagons which are basically fully optioned mini buses capable of seating 14, with windows all around, radio, air controls all around etc. Then you have Cargo Vans which are basically stripped from the back of the driver seat on. No carpet, roof, seats, limited windows, if any, basically just bare panels, roof, and floor. These vans only come with 6 or 8 cylinder engines and a diesel engine. You also have minivans which come in an assortment of forms, and offer more compact sizes, and smaller engines (only 4 or 6 cylinders available). A ton of manufacturers make minivans both foreign and domestic HOWEVER only Ford and Chevy make a mini cargo van (the Aerostar and Astro Van respectfully) if you decided it had to be a cargo.
Pros and Cons of Cargo and Wagon:
Wagons offer more comfort and better drivability than a Cargo, and the seat rows usually remove in a snap if more room is needed.
Wagons are less secure than a cargo because they come fully windowed and offer theives easier access to your stuff by breaking a window as opposed to a cargo which has very limited if any windows at all.
Cargo vans are alot harder to manuever in a parking lot, or in traffic due to limited visibility as they usually have no side windows only the rear doors, or no windows at all.
usually used Cargo vans tend to be in pretty bad shape because they are either fleet cars which see many different drivers, or the owners see it as a "work vehicle" and dont take much care of them (especially inside). they also tend to be asthetically poor due to fender benders of mentioned poor visibility issues.
Basically a minivan wagon and cargo see the same pros and cons. Only difference is size, and engine. If you feel you need something smaller and economical then a minivan is for you. Also a minicargo is much easier to manuever than a full size.
Your most import deciding factor is BUDGET what can you afford New? or used?
You should also get an in person experience with each type and find out which u are most comfortable with
lastly if going used its very important to pay attention to mileage and service records. Buying from a personal owner can be a nightmare so take a reputable mechanic with you for inspection. Understand that reparing vans is usually more expensive than a typical car because there is less access to under hood components than a car, and suspension parts are usually heavy duty and require more labor to replace or repair. if the seller can back up repairs with service history consider it a big plus because many of the important repairs might have been completed saving you from a major repair bill in the future.
